To manage all the resources in the University Library, set of well trained and qualified staff is necessary. The university therefore require the services of three categories of staff to work in the library. The first category is the professional librarian, followed by the Library Officers and support staff. Librarians found in the university library are referred to as the academic librarians with Master degree usually in Library and Information Science from reputable higher institutions of learning. They usually graduate with Master Degree in Library and Information Science known as M.L.S., M.L.I.S., M.S.L.S., or M.M.L.I.S.
It should be noted that, the success or failure of any academic library depends largely on the calibre of its personnel especially the core staff (Librarians and Library Officers).
According to Librarians Registration Council of Nigeria (LRCN, 2014) on composition of mixed categories of staff, the following are recognized.
Ø Librarians (academic staff): University graduates from recognized library schools with degree of masters. They constitute management team. (This category of staff should be able to catalogue, classify, select, acquire index and abstracting library materials etc.)
Ø Library Officers: Intermediate personnel with National Diploma and Higher National Diploma certificates. They are the middle level manpower.
Ø ICT Support Staff: ICT is a term used in the library to refer to application of computers and other technologies for effective library practices such as library website management and maintenance, OPAC administration, hardware and software engineering, database storage and dissemination of information.
Ø Support Staff: Library Attendants and Library Assistants with WASC, NECO, GCE or their equivalence as well as other administrative, clerical and secretarial staff.
Synergy among these categories of staff leads to effective and efficient library services.
